Legacy Planning

We Beat the Odds

As a parent, I find myself in the midst of a whirlwind of emotions, navigating the complexities of high school graduation. I know I’m not alone in this experience. Many parents are grappling with the same challenges, but this period has been especially revealing for me. It’s a time of reflection, a moment to recognize that we’ve made it—we’ve beaten the odds.

Facing the Statistics

Single motherhood is far from uncommon. According to my research, around 23% of children in the U.S. live in single-mother households. I’ve heard the statistics time and again: children from single-mother homes are significantly more likely to live in poverty, drop out of school earlier, and face behavioral and mental health issues. I can see why. I’ve had my share of failures in being fully present for my children. Yet, I am incredibly grateful for the faith, education, support, family, friends, opportunities, and career that have helped me navigate these challenges.

A Focus on Resilience

I’ve poured everything into guiding my children toward adulthood, equipping them with the skills they’ll need in life, whether I’m there or not. Over the years, I’ve wrestled with guilt and self-doubt, questioning if I was doing enough. But here we are—I have three remarkable children, and my oldest two (twin boys) are graduating high school with accolades earned entirely through their own efforts. I wasn’t always there to help with homework or participate in activities, but I focused on creating a system that made them feel supported and safe.

The Connection to Wealth Management

So, what does this have to do with wealth management? Everything.

Legacy planning is a conversation many of us avoid. We shy away from considering what comes next—for our businesses, families, and lives. As business owners, few of us are prepared for what lies beyond the companies we’ve nurtured. Many parents and grandparents lack plans to ensure that our familial assets are efficiently and effectively transferred. Facing this reality can be painful; it forces us to confront our own humanity.

Preparing for the Future

I have these conversations regularly, and I’ve done what I can to prepare my financial life for my children’s future. In my CEPA® (Certified Exit Planning) program, we tackle these issues. Business owners might prepare for an effective exit, only to feel lost afterward. The same happens to those who save for retirement, only to find themselves unbalanced and frustrated with time and resources but lacking a meaningful purpose. Parents often accumulate assets with the intention of passing them on to their children, yet struggle to let go, missing the opportunity to witness the benefits of their hard work.

Embracing New Beginnings

Beginnings can be uncomfortable. We can plan and prepare, but when the time comes, we struggle to release the past. Working with advisors who understand what truly matters to you is crucial. Advisors who can assist you through life’s transitions are invaluable members of your team. We’re all human, and we all face challenges.
